U13 Walsall FC Challenge Cup
Brierley Hill & Dudley 3-3 Walsall AET
Brierley Hill & Dudley won 5-4 on Penalties

In a competitive cup tie, Brierley Hill & Dudley U13s produced a resilient fight back from 2-0 down and eventually book their place in the next round after a penalty shoot-out victory over a strong Walsall team.

The home side were 2-0 down within ten minutes after failing to deal with 2 long throws which both resulted in deflected shots going in. As the half progressed, Brierley Hill & Dudley started to pass the ball and Shaquille Edwards had several shots go close from outside the area. On the stroke of half time Shane Grainger made it 2-1, scoring from close range when he converted a free kick after Kieran Price had turned the ball goalwards.

In the second half Brierley Hill & Dudley managed to pass the ball with much greater quality and were rewarded with an equaliser when Edwards’ deep cross was headed accuratley back across goal by Stephen Rickhuss to Sam Austin, who found the corner with a precise downward header.

Walsall regained the lead quickly though, converting a close range chance following a free kick. Brierley Hill & Dudley continued to press for an equaliser and Sam Austin provided it with an exceptional goal, bringing down a difficult ball before turning his defender and curling in a shot from 20 yards. The home team had several more chances and were unlucky not to win the game in normal time.

Extra time brought no further goals so the game was to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. Walsall missed their first effort and Brierley Hill & Dudley converted all 5 of their penalties with Stephen Rickhuss, Dan Durman, Shaquille Edwards, Shane Grainger and Sam Austin all holding their nerve. Every player involved deserves credit for a great comeback that demonstrated the great team spirit within the squad.
